You are what you eat. I’m sure you’ve heard that said before. But, what does it really mean?
What does it mean to be what you eat? Does it mean if you eat a tall and skinny french fry you too will be tall and skinny? I’m pretty sure that’s NOT what it means. Have you ever noticed that when you feel sad you eat sad food? What’s sad food? Food that lacks the nutrients to fuel your body.
The other day as I enjoyed my pepper salad (that’s what I call it – various colour peppers, onion, cucumber, feta and greek dressing) I was suddenly aware of what I was eating. I was eating food that is filled with Vitamin C. Vitamin C powers up your immune system. Peppers are also a good source of vitamin E. Vitamin E plays a key role in keeping our skin looking youthful. Onions, maybe they are an acquired taste, but did you know that onions also have vitamin C and they can assist in regulating blood sugar and eating them raw lowers the production of bad cholesterol? I could go on and on and tell you the health benefits of every food in that salad, but I won’t.
But I will tell you that I want to be what I eat! I want to have nice skin. I want to have a powerful immune system (this momma of 3 has no time to be sick!) I want energy! Eating food that is high in sugars, filled with fillers and / or is processed won’t help me become the kind of person I just described to you.
The next time you grab a bite to eat, think about what your eating. Do you want to be filled with empty calories that add nothing to your life? Or do you want to be filled with food that brings life to your life?
